FAQ
- Do I need any experience to join?
- Absolutely NOT! Most of our students had no martial arts experience before they came to Trisakti University Judo Club. All levels are welcome and encouraged to come.
- I do a lot of extracurricular activities. Do I have to attend every practice?
- No, attendance is optional (but highly encouraged). Think of it this way: if you don't come more than once every two weeks, you won't learn any of the techniques that we show in class, you won't get to practice the ones you have learned, and you'll have 2 weeks to forget what we went over the last time you were there. By showing up infrequently, you won't progress, and may even hinder the quality of workout of others. However, everyone is busy, so missing a practice a week is OK.
- What kind of techniques do you go over in Judo?
- Judo has 4 groups of techniques: throwing (about 80% of Judo), choking, arm locking, and pins or hold-downs. We usually go over one throw and one ground technique per practice, sometimes repeating them for extra practice or to show variations. Note: JUDO DOES NOT STRIKE!
- Will Judo keep me in shape?
- YES. We will work you hard, but never make you do more than you can handle. Everyone has the freedom to work at their own pace, but we will push you to work harder if you need a little extra motivation. Top
- How much will this cost me?
- To join the club, close to nothing as far as martial arts is concerned (~$25 per year). However, the purchase of a Judogi (uniform) is mandatory after a week or two (if you decide to stay). Those are typically around $130 (depending on the size). Most Judogis will last a few years of regular practice.
- Can women join too?
- ABSOLUTELY! Many women have joined our club
- Is Judo dangerous?
- Judo was actually found to be the contact sport with the fewest injuries amongst children 13 and younger (though I don't know how that extends to adults). In competition, there are often smaller injuries (ankle sprains, pulled muscles, etc.), but larger injuries are uncommon. We have had people in our club get hurt, but never a crippling injury, and injuries are few and far between. If an injury does occur, we will not push you to injur it further. In fact, a few of us are familiar enough with common Judo injuries, and can give advice as to care for the injury.
- Does the club compete?
- Yes, but nobody is forced to go. We attend tournaments regularly, from the local level to the international level. Tournaments are broken up by weight, rank, age, and sex, so nobody is ever thrown into something that is dangerous or "out of their league".
- What should I wear to practice if I don't have a gi?
- A T-shirt or sweatshirt and athletic shorts or pants will be fine.
- What is a typical workout like?
- See a video of what a typical practice is like. Usually, we stretch and do some rolling and falling for about 15 minutes, followed by uchikomi, or practice entries to throws. Next, we break up into groups and throw each other for a while, followed by a quick water break. Next, we usually show a technique or two, followed by pairing up and practicing the new techniques. Next comes the "meat" of the practice, where we spend usually between 40 and 50 minutes grappling and throwing in a competitive fashion. Last, we usually do a bit of condition for strength and endurance. Historically, we have even done a little bit of training with the Goshin-Jutsu club to get a taste for something a little different (depending on the new schedule, this may/may not be possible).
- Will I make friends at Judo?
- ABSOLUTELY! We have outings a couple times a semester, we have a lot of fun during classes, and travel to tournaments together. There is a great sense of brotherhood among the members of the Judo club, and we take great pride in that.
- Who takes the classes?
- Our classes are taken by Subhan Prasandra and Maulana Adriansyah.
- What happens on the first visit
-
- It can be a bit daunting starting a new sport but Elite Judo Trisakti prides itself on it's friendly atmosphere and inclusion policies.
- You will be made to feel very welcome
- You'll be provided with the use of a club jacket and belt. You should wear old clean tracksuit bottoms and, as you will be in bare feet, have clean feet and short nails!
- You will learn some japanese words, how to fall properly, how to hold people on their backs and how to throw people!
- You will have fun and make new friends!!
- Will I get hurt?
- Injuries can be picked up in any sport, or any activity for that matter, and while judo is not risk free, serious injuries are very rare. Typical injuries are mat burns - where you rub against the mats - and small bruises. Safety is the absolute priority within the club and with the correct training and the mats that we use, we do everything we can to minimise the risks.
- What about judo suits?
- Beginner suits cost approx $60 - $120, depending on size and brand.
- Can I buy one through the club?
- Yes, speak to Subhan and he can advise on the options.
- How do I know which class I should attend?
- Contact us for advice on which class to attend. Although we have beginners classes, depending on your size and/or age it might be best to join in with a different class. Don't worry though, you won't be thrown in at the deep end!
- Do I need to complete any registration forms with contact details etc?
- Yes, a form will need to be completed which will tell us whether you have any medical conditions, special needs and contact details.
- Can children drink during the class?
- Yes, though not on the mat. There are frequent breaks for drinks and you can either bring your own or fill up a cup or bottle from the tap.
- Can I attend every session?
- We train Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 3:00 PM and you can attend every session that is suitable for you.
- Do you do judo in public holidays?
- No
